Uber and Lyft spent over $200 million in California to pass Proposition 22 in California, keeping it’s drivers as independent contractors.
So now that Uber spent all that money, they must certainly care about it’s employees contractors, right?
Let’s take a look at base delivery payments to DRIVERS. (Not that line item in your delivery about delivery charges, this is what UberEats pays drivers)
dates |
BASE DELIVERY PAY TO DRIVERS per delivery |
Pre- Dec 2019 |
$3.50 |
Dec 2019 |
$3.00 |
Oct 2020 |
$2.50 |
Dec 14 2020 |
$2.00 |
Note: Pre-2020 research taken from Reddit, I can personally confirm this year’s delivery pay
Note that drivers do get a mileage bonus for trips over 3 miles, at least in Chicago. Hard to tell as they don’t seem to have anything posted as to what the divers actually are making, only for Uber proper. Also, base and mileage fares may vary by market, but this latest one seems to be nationwide.
So, it’s all about the bottom line and trying to earn a profit off the backs of it’s drivers, but they are still on track to lose $1 billion this year.
But hey, they spent money on a really cool celebrity ad campaign too, so there is that.
